Check out the high comb on the guy's pumpgun. No heads-up shooting there. And, I see references to #7 shot in Drew's archives frequently. What happened to #7 shot? I know the Brits use it, but I never see it here.

SAAMI probably dictates the O.D. of shot sizes today but in the early days of shotgun shooting each manufacturer had it's own shot size and they were similarly numbered, e.g. 4,5,6,7,7 1/2, 8,9,10,11, but O.D.s sometimes varied. Not to say that they weren't close or exactly the same between manufacturers in most sizes but some varied considerably. Some even had shot so fine it was called "mist" or "dust" shot. A steady diet of smallish birds taken with such shot certainly must have produced a plethora of "village idiots"

Straight #7 shot is available in the US. I have a few bags of it I got from Connies Components. It's not an allowable shot size for ATA trap but it's a good shot size for shooting crows, especially in a 20ga.

Drew,

Thanks for the 1902 GAH article. I found the grandfather of an old family friend, J.D. Gay.
