Charlie I am starting to experiment with Tungsten Super Shot. I will be using number 9s in a 2 3/4" 1.25 ounce 12 gauge load. This is supposed to kill turkeys 50 yards or more due to the tungsten shot which is so hard and heavy compared to lead and much more than Hevi-shot. I have loaded these up and the tungsten is in a wad with shot protector wraps inside the wad.

At $47 for a pound I've got to make a shot trap to save the shot on the targets I try. So one ounce is $3. I'm trying to turn these old 2 3/4" guns into the equal of modern 3.5" magnums. They are killing turkeys at 40+ yards with .410 guns. If it works well in 12 I'll be going next to one ounce in 20 to turn them into the same. I'll let you know if it is a success or a failure.

Pretty little things, aren't they? A 3 1/2" ten or one of your 8's make this look like a toy gun shell. $4 worth of shot in each of these #9 loads.

those really look good especially theroll crimping...i still have trouble sometimes getting the crimp even....it s hard to believe you can now stuff 4 bucks in a shell...my dad bought me some costly 10 ga for turkey one year i will have to admit they will shoot a closer pattern than normal shells...worth the extra money when we only shoot a few of them each year...charlie

Man that does sound like an interesting experiment. Intrigued at what you find.

I don't know anything about tungsten in loads, but I find it hard to believe #9 shot of anything approaching 50 yards isn't loosing its oomph. You may give old Tom a hell of a rash, but breaking a vertebrae, I don't know. Maybe need to make up some ballistic gel and see how it penetrates.

Just go to the link I provided if you are not a believer. Also look at this link far below. The #9 Tungsten Super shot has the same 1.5 inch penetration into gel at 70.7 yards as the #5 lead has at 57.4 yards. https://www.tungstensupershots.com/

In a 1.5 ounce load of Tungsten Super Shot #9 there are 536 pellets. In the 1.5 ounce load of #5 lead there are 260 pellets. I think it will be more than a rash and it has proven itself.

I did not see link before, and if its true that is just amazing. Like I said I don't know much about tungsten. BTw what chokes do they recommend for shooting tungsten.

Same chokes but as with any gun you need to pattern. But at the cost of this shot, a shot trap will pay for itself quickly. Examples are on the TSS website.
