Default P. H. circa 1896

Hi,

I have a 12 ga. 28" bbl #1 frame Parker
#1 The grip and head of the stock were oil soaked. I soaked the stock in acetone for four days that removed the oil so well that I when I use a hair dryer on it I cannot raise any oil from the wood, but the grip and the head area are stained much darker than the rest of the stock!
There is no soft or "punky" wood in the inlettingof the stock, all is solid.
I have tryed household bleach to lighten the color of the wood but it remains a grey brown very dark color. Is there any way to get the wood a lighter color?
#2 The twist bbls appear to be blued under the forend but the sides of the bbls. where the finish is worn the twist pattern is very evident. Did Parker blue their twist bbls?
Thank You
Bill E

oxcylic acid is a specialty wood bleach - available at many hardware stores.

I used it to lighten the old ribs in a wood and canvas canoe Irestored so that the new wood would not stand out. worked really well for that.

The application of alcohol to the wood will simulate the look of it with finish on it. That way you can see how that darker section will look in relation to the rest of it.

no matter what - you may well end up using stains to get every thing to match.

If I was into the gun as far as you are I would Acra- Glass the head of the stock, especially a 1 frame 12 bore. I will be doing my 0 frame 16 this winter. If you do a search on this site you should be able to find a couple old threads.

there should be directions on the tub, but mine says for bleaching disolve the 12 oz's in a gallon - or 3 OZ (a generous talespoon is an oz) in a quart of hot water.

personally - I would try it just a litle diluted first - and go to the full strength if the results are not enough.

by the way - here is the difference pre and post bleach in the canoe

inside of the canoe before bleaching

inside after bleaching

as for use - brush it on, let it sit for about 10 minutes and rinse it off a couple times with cold water, I rub a little baking soda mixed in a gallon on hot water to neutralize it after use, rinse that off good to keep a white film from showing up.
