Default Currituck Club

Went to the Whalehead Club two days ago. Used to be called the Currituck club. Great place with lots of gunning and duck hunting history.
The original owner is shown in some pics with a nice big bore double hammer gun. I can't make out the maker though.
the gun room had one Parker . Looks like a grade one top lever 30 inch twelve or ten. Redone case colors, re colored barrels, refinished wood. there was a Trojan in the owners private office.
the tour stated the owner had a pair of custom Purdeys made but gives no other info than that.
21000 square foot mansion for water fowling on private 4 1/2 miles of land is a pretty nice place.

The Atlantic Wildfowl Heritage Museum is cool too. In Virginia Beach. Some good stuff for vintage waterfowl fans in that area

Our family rented houses two times about ten miles up on the roadless beach north of Corola within spitting distance of the Virginia state line. At that time, there were few houses up there, but it was a wonderful place to have a beach vacation. Some of the houses were really elegant for beach digs. The highlight of one of these trips was the two wheel drive '83 Buick four door that made a daily trip up the beach.

Check out spoonercentral.com for lots of information on the Currituck area and Joe Knapp, the founder of More Game Birds in America, later Ducks Unlimited. See his fantastic estate and the Joe Knapp Club as well as pictures of a "Joe Knapp Club" gun. Even more info on the area and duck clubs is available at kiscrapbook.knottsislandonline.com This website also names some books that study the duck clubs of the area.

In the late 60's I used to bass fish in Back Bay out of a 16' juniper duck boat that we kept at the Currituck Club. We used to scrounge around the property and found an old, fallen-down shed to the right of the clubhouse that was full of discarded slat geese and wooden decoys--- discarded by the club. In those piles we found salvagable ones and brought them home. Most of the ducks were MASONS! I still have a few---.

The club is in Duck NC. A great place to visit but traffic is horrendous . There was an opening in one of the old historic clubs a couple of years ago. The buy in was north of $ 50K plus a stout yearly fee, but these rarely become available. Nice if you have a lot of disposable income.
