Default Stock shield question

I am having a BHE restocked and I am wondering if anyone has used the original stock shield with the nails on a new stock? I am concerned about damage when removing it (the shield not the stock which is in two pieces)from the old stock and then installing it on the new stock. Thanks for your replys and insight!

I've only restocked 16 Parkers up to date but I've never had trouble extracting the old shield and using it. Jerry Andrews

Buddy,

I had Dave remove the original shields on my hammer gun and use them on the new stock. He relayed the info to me that this definitely messes up the wood on the original stock around those areas.

Good luck. I cant wait to see the finished product. Maybe in time for the Southern?

Buddy
I have switched out, made, and reinstalled many a stock shield and oval. The easiest and least intrusive way that I have found is. Heat up a 1/4 inch rod to red hot, press it to the center of the shield and add mild pressure. As the shield heats up it will sink deeper into the stock and the nails will expose the heads. Pull the nails and the shield will pop right out, without damaging the shield of the stock.

I've also taken a small stirring stick, placed a drop of quick set on the shield and simply pulled nails and shield out together. I've heard others say they've soldered to the shield but that does not appeal to me. Jerry
