Default 1884 GRADE 2 (E) - BLACK OR BROWN DAMASCUS

Which is correct, black or brown for the damascus pattern in the barrels?

Thanks.

it is my understanding that the barrels were black and white when new.

many if not most British were brown to start, American guns browned with age.

my 1888 still had some black and white left under the foreend
