Default 800X Powder

Has anyone used 800X for 1 oz 12 gauge loads? The manual doesn't show loads for anything lighter than 1 1/8 oz. 800 X has always been a favorite of mine for pheasant loads, but now I want to load it for target stuff. Thanks.

If you find something be sure to post it. I bought a couple of large cans a couple of yrs ago for a very good price and intended to use it for target loads but haven't found appropriate 1oz loads either.

I'm now away from my loading bench, but I did find some 1 oz. loads in an old IMR manual which I will post when I get home. I believe that the reason the 1 oz loads were dropped was poor/ incomplete combustion, particularly in cold weather. (Tough luck Richard!) I'm wondering if increased wad pressure, and the resulting smaller combustion chamber mught improve ignition

I have use 800x loaded lightly in 1 oz. and it does not burn completely. It still can break 25 straight on 16 yard targets and I love the lack of recoil. It does leave the barrel dirty but if you save a 700x shell for your last shot it cleans up very quickly. I load 21 grns. with a CB wad.

A 1983 DuPont reloading guide shows a number of options, depending on case/primer and wad, but they generally use 23 or 23.5gr of 800X. AA case with 209 primer WAA12F1 wad and 23 grains of 800X results in 1195 fps and pressure (LUP) of 5900. Many more loads with 1 1/8 oz shot.

I'm going to try a couple of boxes of this recipe on clays later this week. I'll report on my findings.

If you have a specific combination you are interested in, PM me, and I'll see if it's in the guide.

Not good in the cold, eh? Sounds like PB, which I have LOTS of. It burns like charcoal in the cold. I always use a factory load to clean the bbls on my last shots. Maybe I'll just use the 800x for hunting loads of some sort..

Just back from trying out 23.5 gr of 800 X and 1 oz of shot in AA cases. Performed flawlessly in 65 degree weather. As others have described, barrels are dirty, but I don't care - will clean them regardless. I like the lack of recoil.

BTW, shot at the recently opened Bald Mountain Michigan course near Pontiac. Still a work in progress, but it is a slick track. Three traps at each of 14 stations, plus 5 stand and an "executive" type of 5 stand. Easy targets.

If you're in the area, I would recommend a trip there. Shot with Jay Gardner and a friend. Jay's refurbished 28 gauge Repro by Batchelder is a gem.

65deg, eh? Fat chance of that here for a while... it's 19deg and snowing right now and I have a 480mi flite to make on Friday, wx allowing ,which it very well may not do. My brother lives just a few miles from that Bald Mtn range. I thought it was closed for good; didn't realize they were re doing it. Great. I liked shooting there. I'd figure out which station I wasn't good at on that old SClay course and just stay there until I figured it out. I kicked some huge deer outa there one day, a herd actually, from the swale right in front of the old 5-stand.
