Default "Old style" vs "New Style" parts interchangeability question.

When reading schematics, I noticed that some parts (such as the top lever) are listed as "old style" or "new style". Can an new style parts be made to work in an old style gun or vice versa? Also, which style are the Kodensha built reproductions clones of? Thanks.
