Default Uncheckered Forend?

The forend on my 12ga hammer gun doesn't have any checkering, nor signs of worn checkering. Was this common?

It's a “PHE” Grade Field Model, #1 frame, SxS 12 ga with hammers, 30” Twist barrels, barrel wt. 45oz., w/extractors, single brass muzzle sight, 2-9/16”chambers and fishtail top lever, splintered forend. Manufactured in 1887, Serial # 52485, with all matching numbers.

It was originally checkered.

The wood on that forend has been so over-sanded at some time that it has all been long lost. It is functional, but beyond that, it is a total loss.

Okay so if it's a P grade with hammers and extractors how is it described?

It is described as a Grade-1 top action hammer gun. You can replace the 1 with a P and basically have the same description.

There were guns without checkering on both the forend and stock. I believe most of these were "0" grade lifters. Though there may have been top actions too. And customers requests as previously stated.

That sounds like an interesting CH, I like that you have it in the letter! Very cool...
