Default "Visitor Messages"

Hi folks,

In the software update and code changes I just finished on the servers this afternoon, I want you to know I globally "shut off" the "Visitor Messaging"..

You may ask why...

Many of the folk on this forum were confused between a "Visitor Message" and a "Private Message" - and would send a Visitor Message thinking no one could read it but the recipient. Unfortunately - nothing could be further from the truth. Those "messages" were "wide open" for anyone to see...

Another Member who shall remain nameless (Hi Chuck! ) also pointed out that there was no direct link to re-read a visitor messages - which raised another "software" issue in my mind (I think in "software and hardware" - sorry )

Anyway - while some of the public visitor messages were an "interesting read" (ah-hem, like a PGCA Member who was trying to buy a non-members Parker?? Not that that would EVER HAPPEN!! ) - but, anyway - the ONLY messaging system from here forward will be "Private Messaging"..

My thanks and my best!

- John D.

Well John, since you "outed me", here's another one you can work on seeing as how you have nothing else to do

How about adding a search box to the Membership List! A search box that would be by last name. I'm not too thrilled by the search function for Private Messaging because you have to spell the name exactly as they use for their sign on.

I'll keep trying to help you find more work!

Thanks for the work you do do!

Well.... Actually....

You outed yourself Do you know how many folks with the name of "Chuck" are on this forum?? Twenty-one. 21. 20+1. 22-1. So - don't hand me that...

About the search.... Hmmm - it already exists...

Start a new private message - go ahead...

Now - start typing a name... You can use mine... Type "J"... Now type "o"... Now watch.. See the list of Members starting to appear..?? As you type more - the list get smaller.. That's right - the server is sending your textbox code... It's "smart sensing" what you are typing - same way Google does... Make a spelling error - no problem - back space and look at the drop down list...

Ha....

Got'cha....

John, take time to read my post. I asked if you could add a search function to the "Members List"

I know how the search function works in Private Messages. Here is what I have trouble with in the Private Messages. Take my name. If you know to put in Chuck, it's no problem finding me. However someone could search Charles, Charlie, Chick, Chas, etc., all variations of Charles. They won't find me unless the name they use is Chuck.

I just figure that a simple search on the last name would be more helpful when used in the Member List. Just a suggestion.

Thanks.... Chuck, Charlie, Charles, Chip, Chaz, etc.

Dear Chuck, Charlie, Charles, Chip, Chaz, etc.

Nope - I won't do it on the Memberlist... Why..???

Think about what you are asking..... Think about privacy - and why I hacked the code so folks had to "register" with their "real names" BUT - can use a "name" like "Pa SXS"...

I won't poke a hole in my own security...

Just sayin'

That's fine, it was just a suggestion.

P.S. I got the e-mail from WD. I'll do it tomorrow.

I love suggestions - as they get some GREAT ideas ramblng around in my brain...

Also - PM me when you are on? The WD circuits have been flaky for a few days - but, they (WD) have said their proxies will be stabilized over the next 24 hours.. We will see, eh??

Best to you Chuck, Charlie, Charles, Chip, Chaz..!

John, I can't thank you enough.

I have personally never used the Visitor Message function for the very reasons you point out. Further, I will only respond to a Visitor Message in a PM or personal email.... and then I immediately delete the message left for me. Everybody's business was out there for everyone else to read.... no privacy at all in those.... but the people leaving those messages didn't know that part of it.

Once again John - Thank You very much.
