The name on the stock shield may or may not be the original owner. Only a letter would tell you that. Based on the style of the lettering the the brightness of the cuts, I would say it is not original to the gun, but more likely way more recent.

Considering the condition of the gun it wouldn’t surprise me if that engraving was as old as the gun.

I'll have to join as a member and order a letter to find out.
I did find a Webster Gatchell here in Maine that was born in 1876 and died in 1959, so that may be him.
In any case, my PH will now forever be called "Webster"!
