Mixed bag of Waterfowl
The tide was too low for a morning hunt so I took my time and arrived at the boat ramp at 11AM. I was glad for the daylight as I had a new prop on my 6 hp, I was unsure the motor would behave, seems I spun a hub on my last hunt and I was hoping the new prop would fix the problem which it did. I was also hoping where I wanted to hunt would be free of ice and for the most part it was. There was some but not enough so that I had go chase after decoys. After setting out my dekes, the lucky seven of them, I sat down and poured a coffee (opening a thermos is a great duck producing act) only to look up and see a small duck cupping in. I didn't need a Parker Short Ten for this one, a 30 yard shot and I bagged Green Wing Teal, and in December in New Hampshire!!! It was a nice day today with a light West wind, sunny and temps in the low 30's. It had the makings of a blue bird day and I wasn't expecting all that much action and I was happy to have bagged the little and rather late migrant duck. However as the afternoon wore on the action picked up. When I got back to the boat ramp at the end of the day there was a GWT, three mallards (one banded) and three Canada geese in the boat. Now we are in for a two day deep freeze with double digit below zero wind chills. Will have to see what we have for open water when the Siberian express pulls out of town this weekend.
