Default Rem 1894 Barrels

From an E or F grade. Right barrel uses 4 different segments, all mismatched.

Usually pattern mismatching is more common on low grade guns. I have seen some that seem to have original dark bluing or browning over mismatched Damascus or twist segments. This may be manufacturer's work done to cover mismatching. This barrel set, however, was normal age darkened and the stripping and re browning revealed the mismatched pattern.

Interesting and great info Bruce. The barrels might be miss matched but they are beautiful Damascus patterns to say the least!

Did a bit of work on the images Bruce. It should be a C grade and Remington called that pattern Washington N.3 B.P. It was also called 'American Flag Bunting' and 'Stars and Stripes', and was quite popular with other U.S. makers, esp. Ithaca but for some reason not Hunter Arms.

Breech

Middle

Muzzle

We know from Claude Gaier's Four Centuries of Liege Gunmaking that Ernest Heuse-Lemoine of Nessonvaux named both "Washington" and "Boston" patterns for the US market. The 'rough forged tubes' were paired, wired together, and shipped to Ilion in a barrel. The pattern is very hard to identify on the rough tube, and I suspect the fellas at Remington were none too happy after joining, finishing, fitting, and staining the barrels to find the mismatched segments And the breech is a mess!

And the 'Gold Towel Guy's' 16g Grade 2 Toplever Hammergun with Washington
