Default Primers

Cabelas has primers on sale. Picked up a few bricks of Cheddite 209 for $21.99, not a bad price!

Yes, and Gamaliel Shooting Supply has a package deal - two 8# of Clays and 5000 Win 209 primers for $399.95 and no Hazmat fee.

Anybody notice that Remington SP hulls seem to HATE Nobel Primers (tough to seat). I own 5k of Nobles and just got 200 New REM SP 10 gauge hulls. Oh well, an excuse to up my inventory. Thanks for the info on the primer sales.

It may just have been a particular lot of Cheddite primers I encountered a few years ago, but the brick I had were WAY oversize. So much so, I could only use them in stretched out pockets. They would not seat in a normal US or Euro hull pocket.

This issue may be a non-issue now. But I still buy Federals exclusively.

I believe Cheddite had two different size primers - not sure if they still do.

I say they may have in the past but I've used over 50K of them with no problem. And if you shoot very much at 108/5K compared to Win at 135/5K there's some savings.

I understood that at one time European primer pockets were different in size than those intended for use in the U.S. and that Cheddite manufactured primers in both sizes. I also heard that Fiocchi did/does the same.

A friend I shoot with shoots quite a bit of 16 ga. Last year he experienced an inordinate amount of obviously light loads. He was perplexed about the problem as he has been shooting the particular load for years. Except, that is, he attempted to economize a bit and started using Cheddite primers. He went back to Win. primers and the problem went away. So, maybe it depends on the powder/load being used. I believe he loads Greendot.

Not all the time, but usually Rem primers have less pressure than others. Win, Cheddite, Rio, etc are all the same and are what could be called normal. Fed and CCI209M are hotter primers. I use Cheddite primers and GD in my 10ga with no problem. Looking at my IMR reloading manual they usually go down a grain in powder if using a Fed primer instead of a Win primer, everything else being the same.
