Bobwhites and Parkers are a great combination.

In about 45 days I'll be chasing Quail and have begun the task of deciding what to take. It's harder than it seems

2017 Kansas..
I had my first combo double on wild birds......My CSMC Fox XE-16 29" was the gun on this hunt, we had worked the plumb thickets and CRP when both dogs locked up. I could see my setter up in front of me to my left. She slowed to a point and all hell broke loose! It was birds may-ham! Roosters, hens and quail all in the air. A rooster lifted in front of my Ruby and I got on it, a right to left going away shot through the old wood lot. I saw it drop, I turned to my left and tracked a quail going hard and fast from right to left behind me.....it fell just before it would have been safe! I marked it and went after my rooster. Steves dog had it so I went back for my quail I had marked. Ruby was right with me as I looked, no bird...as I looked she pointed and I found my bird hiding next to a log in the leaf clutter. This was our last hunt of our 6 1/2 days in Kansas, it was a great hunt for the books! SXS Ohio

Hi Kenny, heard you met my good friend Mike out in Kansas. He left home today, headed back out there again.

Kenny,
Good to see pictures of Miss Ruby. I love seeing Gordons do what they're bred to do. Our Missouri season has about a month left. We are finding coveys, but not as many as last year. Still, I remind myself, here deep in the 21st Century, I'm hunting wild quail over Gordon Setters with a fine shotgun. I'm sure you understand that feeling. Thanks to all who have shared their hunting experiences here. |
