Speaking of setters....how to put weight on one.

My Llwelin, Gus, was really sick, he went from 55 to 47lbs, from not eating for a week. He's coming back around and eating picky, what do you guys do to put weight on a dog before the season? Thanks!

Can't force-feed them. Lleqelyns are lean anyhow.
I feed my 15 m.o. Two rounded cups in the morning for early grouse.

I've been throwing everything I can I. His bowl, he's finally eating, almost back up to 55lbs!

The only way I have found to put weight on my setters during running season is to lock them up and not let them run.

Seriously, I feed the best quality high fat/high protein diet and as much as they will eat. Fill the bowls and they limit their intake and it seems the harder they run the less they eat. I've tried all sorts of additives to get them to eat more and without much success. During hunting season they loose weight and nothing I have found prevents it.

I was thinking that too, Im going to just start giving them hamburger pattie!

A Scottish game keeper I spent time with fed his dogs raw tripe. High in fat, and it was free, as he also stalked stags in the fall. Said it was the only thing that kept weight on his dogs when they were trialing, or picking up

Feed him any premium hi-performance food and he will bounce back. Too much weight on a dog is far worse than not enough.

I completely agree with you on that point Daryl.

A healthy dog is a slim dog.

I run 5-10 miles every other day, my bird dogs probably cover double that as they are off leash on trail, as a hunter, I refuse to have out of shape or fat bird dogs and be that way myself!
