Default 8 ga pyrodex loads

been raining here so decided to load up a few black powder substute loads. i looked up a black powder load it used a 110 grains of black..this would be a pretty stout load.. i cut the the load to 50 grains of pyrodex ..i used the winchester clear hull win.209 primer 3 1/2 inch fiber wads 1 1/2 ounce of bb shot 1/8 inch over shot wad and roll crimped... i shot 2 of these loads in the old mills 8 ga parker..report of sound was good ..recoil was very very low..good on the old gun stock and easy on the shoulder..will be a good squirl load...only thing if iuts raining like it was here when i shot these 2 shells it will be hard to see the squirl fall beause of so much smoke... im headed back out to load up a box ... charlie

Had to borrow some from Mills' 8 gauge fund to buy a GH 16 gauge, but funds have been restored plus a little.

charlie, my old BP measure loads equal powder/shot. A 1oz load calls for 2 1/2 drams or 68grs and the 1 1/2oz load is 3 1/2 drams or 95grs. When I load for clay targets with the 12 or 10ga I use 75grs of 3F and 1oz of shot. If I want to make some noise and smoke it's 95grs of 2F and 1 or 1 1/8oz of shot. Now, I like low recoil as much as anyone seeing how my normal load with nitro is 3/4oz of shot; but your load 50 grs seems a bit too light. You sure those BB's aren't going to bounce off those tree rats ? Hell, they're going to look down at you and laugh. I once shot one on the ground with a bow and arrow that had a blunt point and it went up his butt. He ran in a wood pile with his guts hanging out his back side. Those are tough little critters to kill. I would think at least 80grs to do the job, but let us know how they work.

paul i tried shooting some of the same loads again this morning in the mills 8 ga gun..in fact shells were loaded same day i shot the other loads..50 grains of pyrodex is a good low pressure load with the 1 1/2 ounce of bb shot..the shells have a very good report not much recoil very little but gun weighs in at 13 .6 lbs ...the load will knock off a lotta oak leaves away up in a oak tree... this will be my squirl load in the 8 ga... charlie
