Default Western NY Pheasant hunt.

Scott Janowski asked me to go hunting with him and his wife this morning. It was nice weather for it. The rain held off until just as we were finishing up. His two dogs, Lucy and Otis were just great. We Flushed a number of birds, missed a few but took most and ended up with 6 in the bag at the end of the hunt.

Discussion in other threads ask about what are good Pheasant guns. Well, here are two of them. I was shooting a Lefever DS 12g. lightweight and Scott was shooting a straight grip Parker VH 20g.

Along the way, we found a monster buck that had to have been shot last night as it was in good shape. An 11 point that I would estimate at 200 lbs. Shot cleanly through the windpipe. We checked with the land owner to let them know about it. We helped them get it up to the road and they ended up taking it, so it didn't go to waste.

I do not get the chance to get out bird hunting much, so a big thank you to Scott for the invitation!

Brian, good hunt. Are these wild birds or preserve?

Kind of both i suppose. It is private land that is regularly stocked for the purpose of hunting.

Indeed sounds like fun and I'm sure a good break from the shop for Brian. I think the only hunting I'll be doing for the next number of months will be with a shovel looking for all the stuff that has gotten buried in the snow around my house after my absence of 5 weeks.

Too bad about that buck! Looks like the coyotes had started on it judging by the loose hair all over it. I'll bet the guy that shot it will have nightmares about that one for the rest of his life! It's extremely hard to track a wounded deer on dry ground that leaves no blood trail.

Thanks for the pics and the story. Great that you helped and did not let that buck go to waste. Beautiful guns.

Charlie - My Lab Daisy gets invited to driven bird shoots, and I am allowed to come along as a truck driver. We see a broad selection of color phases on some of these pen raised chickens. Most common is a melanistic black pheasant
