Default Parker VH 12g

I'm new to this forum and am pleased to have just bought a well-used VH #2 12g with Damascus barrels at a nearby gun show. It has an 1898 (sn 89275) receiver with replacement 1901 Damascus barrels. I've heard/read various opinions about using modern shells with Damascus barrels and I'd like to hear from PGCA members the pros & cons about shooting older Parkers with those barrels. The bores are good with minor surface dings. I'd love to hunt with it if possible.

Any other info that my pics reveal would also be appreciated. I'm unsure what the "D" and "C" marks indicate, maybe choke size? I believe the "4 5" is barrel weight. Thanks for any help.

The D is the stamp indicating Damascus Steel.
The C is likely an inspector's or worker's stamp.
You're right about the 4 and the smaller 5... 4 lbs., 5 oz. before striking.

Do you know for a fact that the gun went back to the factory for the replacement Damascus barrels?
Are the barrels serialed to the gun?
You should really have the barrel wall thickness measured by a reputable gunsmith before you fire it.
It appears that you're missing the cocking hook and its screw...

Thanks, Dean. Barrels are not serialed to the gun. Previous owner replaced the original damaged barrels. I think you're right about the hook & screw being missing. Difficult parts to find? I plan to take it to a good smith for a thorough look-see but I'm very interested in Parker owners experiences in shooting with Damascus barrels.

I shoot Damascus barreled Parkers almost exclusively... With appropriate loads of course. And a lot of members here do also.

That's something that shouldn't be answered until the barrels have been checked for safe min. wall thickness for their entire length. Remember, the thinnest spot must pass muster.

I agree, Dean. Any idea what that safest minimum standard is? ...Never mind, I found that info-min. barrel thickness in forward 2/3 is .025 inch and rear 1/3 is .090 inch according to FAQ web page.
