In my 10 I've been using 21.5grs and 1 1/16oz of lead. They sure break clay birds real good, and not much recoil.

I have pretty much settled on 22.5 Green Dot 1 1/8 oz shot in the 2 7/8 inch 10. Not that other powders won't work it's just that GD works well in the 10 and I don't use it for other gauges. My Parker Hammer gun at 10 lbs works fine with a stronger charge but the Ithaca Super 10 at a little over 9 lbs feels better with the lighter load.

In fact loading 400 10's now for the Fall Southern SxS, This year leaving the 12G guns at home, going to shoot everything but the sub gauge with the 10

Shoot the sub gauges with the 10 - they won't notice.

Alliant actually has a published load using 29 grains of Green Dot in a Federal Hull (3.5"), with an 1 1/4 of lead shot. Win 209 primer, SP 10 wad with 6 .135 cards for filler. Velocity is 1265, pressure 8800.

I used this as a baseline and load 27 gr GD with 1 1/4 ounce lead in a 2 7/8" Fed hull. SP10 wad and 1/4" fiber filler. I have shot a lot of crows with this load through composite barrel guns without issue.

I'm shopping about for a 10 gauge and am fascinated by this loading you boys are talking about. Sounds like something along the lines of field artillery or an anti-personnel mine, frickin 29 grains of Green Dot?!?!

I started with Green Dot charges as high as 27 grains and 1 1/4 oz. way to much recoil for me or the guns stock. 22.5 GD and 1 1/8 oz is a fine target load. Can't imagine any good reason to charge a vintage 10 G gun with 29 grains even if the published load shows low pressure. JB used it as a baseline not a load he is shooting.

Fellow gave me some RST # 6 factory loads and they are punishing to shoot in my light Ithaca. Not so bad in the Parker Hammer Gun. And recoil is subjective, with the individual gun key. Targets am shooting 100 plus in a day easy shooting in the light gun is important. Paul's 21.5 and 1 1/16 oz looks attractive to me.

Going to work up a 10 G crow load. It's probably going to be 1 1/4 oz # 7 and a very little bit more GD than 22.5 I will be looking for about 1150 fps. I may end up with as much as 26 Grains. Chronograph will tell.

Key to these 10 G loads is the fiber wad, let's you set the charges height for good crimps with light charges powder or shot.

Run your load through a Chrono, I bet you'll find 26-27 gr Green Dot is under 1200 fps.

BTW the Alliant load in 3.5" used 29.5 gr GD. Larger shot at slower velocity beats small shot at higher velocity every time.

I settled on 1 1/8 ounce of 6 pushed along by 19 gr of Red Dot for crows. The tight chokes and 6's knock them down as far as I can shoot 'em.
