Pledge furniture polish works for me. Be careful not to use anything at all aggressive or you will go right through the first layer and leave an unsightly (and permanent) "fisheye." I believe it is a polyurethane finish, but I don't think there is any kind of "clearcoat" as Kenny said, just the finish.

Thanks guys. I'll try the pledge first, if I need to be more aggressive I'll try the polish. I wiped the stock down and the rag that apparently had a little kroil on it so there is a dull spot the size of a half dollar you can see in the light. I'll give it a shot tonight.

Regarding the Deet bug repellent - fly fishers have learned that Deet is also murder on fly lines. To solve the problem, I apply the Deet to the back of my hands and wipe neck and face with the back of my hands.

For me, the DEET problem has solved itself. When I began using it more than twenty years ago I developed severe headaches and became violently sick to my stomach. It also deteriorated the steering wheels of my GMC and my Volvo. I stopped using it the first summer I started using it but not until I learned what was the cause of my physical reaction.
