Also called Selous plates after the noted safari hunter Frederick Selous. He did this to a lot of his firearms for added strength.

The last one i owned with plates like this was a heavy PH 12g. Both plates came up to the metal on top and bottom and both sides have about 12 screws in them. All the screw heads were indexed and finished flush with the plate.
When i removed the action from the stock, i found no evidence of damage to the wood.
