In January 2002 the Philadelphia Museum of Art sponsored an exhibit of around 106 original paintings (mostly oil) and 23 or so sketches by Thomas Eakins (1844-1916). The vast majority of the works were loaned from private collections and were in outstanding original condition.
Being a Philly boy by birth and a rail hunter by avocation, I wasn't about to miss this! I drove up from home in northern VA on one of the coldest days I can ever remember, primarily to see the painting below, "Pushing for Rail", which he painted practically in view of the city on the Delaware River. It was more than worth the drive.
