Our house had a similar phone in the mid-50's, complete with a central operator and a party line - you had to listen for YOUR ring before you picked up (of course, anybody else who wanted to pick up too could listen in) and you had to go through the operator and give her the number to call out. I remember we were in pretty tall cotton when the town finally got rotary dial phones.
