Thank you for your reply!
The new hook has spring and plunger and moves freely. Its travel should be sufficient to catch the crank but it does not. I will check for tolerances when I have time. Its width may need adjusting. If I can't ID the exact cause of problem I will take the gun apart and then I'll see what is hanging up.
