Default Reunited?

Top gun is a Parker SB, serial no. 241027. According to the IBM card it was shipped on September 21, 1937, to I. R. Pancake. Mr. Pancake was the president of The Bostwick-Braun Co., of Toledo, Ohio. It was, and still is, one of the largest wholesale hardware companies in the mid-west.

Bottom gun is a Parker SC, serial no. 241029. According to the IBM card it was shipped on November 24, 1937, (two months later) to The Bostwick-Braun Co.

According to the records the next gun to be shipped to Bostwick-Braun was in January of 1939, over one year later. And that was just a single gun.

Now it certainly could be that 241029 was shipped as an inventory gun, but it doesn’t appear that Bostwick-Braun was a big dealer in Parkers. I like to imagine that Mr. Pancake received his SB in late September and took it out to the trap club in Toledo. (He did shoot ATA registered targets.) While at the club a friend may have admired it and in passing expressed a desire to own one of these fine guns, but perhaps not quite so expensive. Mr. Pancake may then have offered to order his friend one through Bostwick-Braun and let him have it at cost. Of course we will never know the true story but one thing is certain, both of these guns landed in Toledo within two months of each other. And perhaps 82 years ago they shot together, side by side, at a trap club in Ohio. One can dream.
