GH 16 gauge

I'm considering the purchase of a very early G grade, 1 frame, 16 ga, with two sets of barrels both damascus, 30" (two beads) and 26" (one bead). Barrels are not pitted or dented and look to be a candidate for low pressure 2 1/2" loads. The wood is in good shape (no cracks or gouges) with plenty of finish, DHBP with engraved and timed screws. Engraving is sharp and some case colors, screws are timed and not buggered. Only one forearm which fits the 30" barrel and won't close on the 26" barrel. Action is tight. Some figure is visible on the barrels, which I was thinking of having refinished as per European tradition (probable cost aound $1,000). Replacing the forearm is likely to be expensive. Gun comes in a fitted case. Should I pursue this and any guidance on what I should set as a spending limit? Thanks very much for your advice.

Sounds like a great gun, i have a GH 16 on the 0 frame. So, are both sets of barrels numbered to the gun? Sounds like the 30" are . I wouldnt think fitting the fore end with the 26" barrels a big problem, maybe brian will chime in. I would do that first, then refinish the barrels, and that will probably be 8-900. Pictues of the gun would be great.

I forgot to mention that the stock is a capped pistol grip. The wood to metal fit is excellent and I very much doubt that the gun was ever taken apart. The gun fits me well. Thanks again.

(ATTN Harold Pickens) Both barrels have the same serial number and there is the number 2 on one of the forearm lugs.

I will try to get the stock dimensions and measure the chokes of each barrel after it stops snowing.

Thanks again.

wow, thats really special, a 2 barrel set. Wonder if there was a second fore arm then. Looking foward to pictures.

Original two-barrel sets were ‘always’ supplied with two forends numbered also 1 & 2 for the respective barrels they were fitted to.

The one forend could likely be made to work on both barrels. So having a second forend made up for the second set would only be needed if you really want to one.

If you want the gun, go after it.
