Rooster

While growing up in Idaho in the late 60's and early 70's pheasant hunting was outstanding, but then it dropped off to almost nothing today. Shooting one of the most regal birds is a bonus, but doing it with a beautiful old Parker like that one while accompanied by a great dog is priceless.

Congratulations.

Thanks Dean and Larry. Just carrying a fine double in the field, capturing pictures from the hunt, and watching the dog have fun is what it is all about. I am a true believer that time spent in the field cannot be deducted from a man's life. Here are some pics of another Idaho pheasant hunt earlier in the year with a rare French 10 gauge buck and ball early breech loader. Notice the huge percussion fences and Bernard damascus barrels.

8 Gauge
Last Tuesday and Wednesday, While hunting the willows along the Snake River, the cold sent me to the showers early both days. Three hours was all I wanted. Looks like you got A longer tail feather than I did. Some Idaho Pheasants can grow a real tail feather. I see several this year that best 27 Inches. Appears you may have a good one also. Good luck with that Ten Gauge on Idaho pheasants, some days even that is not enough gun. Many days I shoot an Ithaca Super Ten on pheasants. I hunt on the Ft. Hall Indian reservation and Dec, 6 is the last day for me. Good shooting to you.:)

That tail feather looks like 30 bars or more.

Shells

Are those 10 gauge Winchester shells reloads or are you shooting full strength ammo?

I do love the 10 gauge. My lifter has factory 28 inch barrels and according to factory record puts 200 #8 pellets in a 25 inch circle at 45 yards! Must have originally been used for passenger pigeons or something. Do you need a special permit to hunt Fort Hall? What is the cover like?

It was a nice bird but only had a 26" tail feather. I was actually looking for huns but didn't see any that day. The pheasant was a target of opportunity.

I shoot both black powder and smokeless in most of my guns. The gun pictured with the shell sticking out has 70 thousandths wall thickness! It was used in Africa as a lion or tiger gun. It can shoot both round ball and shot. It weights 15 pounds. My Parker lifter has 40 thousandths minimum wall thickness. I shoot full house factory old stock 2 7/8 shells thru it as well. I generally only buy and collect damascus guns. The workmanship is unbelievable.
