Nice grouse from last year

Just wanted to show a grouse mount I picked up today. This is just a temporary location in my room; when I get some time it will make a brace with another one I have, both hanging on a piece of old rail fence.

Taken with a 20 bore Sterly last November and one of the two largest birds in 2017 that went right into the freezer for mounting. A Fox gets the Game.

Also, single or double click to check out that old Murad cigarette print in the background - 10 cigs for 15 cents. What are smokes now …. something like six or seven bucks for 20 ?

That's a beautiful mount and a beautiful bird. Where I hunt, we call that a red phase bird as opposed to the grey phase. I always liked to take the red phase birds. We have both in my coverts. When I hunted grouse out west, I only saw grey phase birds. I have never seen a red phase in the west.

That is a very neat style of taxidermy. Reminds me of the work from one of my favorite after the hunt wildlife artists from Louisiana, George Louis ViaVant. He painted water colors of fish and game hung like that on nail or peg. What I like about his paintings was he hunted and painted his works during the heyday of Parker in early 20th Century. Heck he might of even used a Parker to harvest his game. You don't see that style very often.

BTW do you have other birds mounted like that or what made you decide to it that way. Again I think it is a neat piece.

Thanks everyone, the second big bird in the freezer went to Mike at Rock Mountain who had it mounted also in the hanging style. It's now in his clubhouse. Inspiration came from the "A Fox gets the Game" A H Fox Gun Company 1913-24 catalog covers that show birds hanging on a rail fence, hunter absent but his gun leaning against the fence, and a daring red fox sneaking up.

Here's the other grouse I referred to in the first post. Not a good pic and hard to see this one has a rufous ruff, only the second one I've taken in many years of grouse chasing. Killed in 2016 also with a 20 bore Fox (different one) and mounted in '17 by another taxidermist.

Both birds will be hanging together once I get an old weathered fence rail from a cover I hunt when out in the mountains.

For those who haven't seen the Fox catalog cover scene, here it is on a banner available over the table at shows and shoots from the A H Fox Collectors Association. Shown in my room with a mink and two standing grouse mounts.
