Great prints Jerry, love the English setters

Rich Anderson 04-16-2018 04:20 PM

Very nice. Where did you find the dealer and manufacturer prints?

Jerry VanHorn 04-16-2018 04:50 PM

I found the 1903 Dupont in a shop in Maine. ..several years ago..The SSFox and Federal were found at other shops..These are some of about 60 that I have collected over the years.

Dean Romig 04-16-2018 04:58 PM

Fabulous prints Jerry. I am envious. My very small collection is growing though.
A neighbor here in Andover has a WHF print of an English pointer. If it was of a setter I would pester him until he cried "uncle" and sold it to me.

Very nice collection, Jerry! I love seeing sporting art on display year-round in our house. It helps carry me from one season to the next!

Rick Losey 04-16-2018 06:04 PM

some of my favorite artists there - thanks

i am trying hard not to add more prints - several have not seen a wall in years

but i also never count them :rotf:

Rich Anderson 04-16-2018 06:48 PM

I'm not breed specific as I favor a GSP in the field but they are seldom encountered in artwork.

Dean what's a WHF print? An English Pointer is a stylish dog. Do you have a picture of that print?

My wall space is at a premium as well so I bought another house in the U.P. and it's at a premium there also:)

Just a guess... William Harnden Foster (WHF)

Dean,

My WHF print with setter...

Yes, William Harnden Foster is the artist. His paintings and prints are truly coveted.

The upper picture is in my neighbor's house. Could both pictures be of the same dog?

Bill Foster's friend and owner of the original skeet field here in Andover, Charles Davies, also owner of Glen Rock Kennels at the same address, raised, trained and sold English Pointers.

Dean Romig 04-16-2018 07:19 PM

Michael, I have that same print.

.

Michael Meeks 04-16-2018 07:24 PM

Was the other WHF setter print you were referring to his 1939 CH Sports Peerless Pride?

Dean Romig 04-16-2018 07:25 PM

I believe it is Michael.

.

Rick Losey 04-16-2018 07:36 PM

since he got some some WHF illustrations from me - i think there is a shine wall some place

my stack has many Osthaus (go figure) and more than a few A B Frosts - then a mix of others i just liked

Dean Romig 04-16-2018 07:46 PM

I just noticed the painter of Jerry's bottom picture is "Hy" Hintermeister - another of my favorite sporting artists.

Dean, If you ever wrestle your neighbor into submission let me know... My current Grouse buddy "Parker" bears a slight resemblance....

Tom Jay 04-16-2018 09:21 PM

It’s interesting you never see a GSP in a classic grouse/woodcock painting. Nouveau dogs...

Dean Romig 04-16-2018 09:48 PM

That's because the GSP was only introduced to the US in the 1920's and wasn't recognized by the AKC until the early 1930's. The classic paintings of American bird dogs were done in the late 19th century and early 20th century.

Dean Romig 04-16-2018 09:50 PM

What a beautiful pointer John! Classic looking.

I have a Robert Abbott print."Shorthair and Grouse".. it's one of my favorites...

allen newell 04-17-2018 06:32 AM

That 1903 print of Geneva is framed and hangs in my living room. classic setter. Original print. Love it

Rich Anderson 04-17-2018 08:27 AM

I've hunted over some pretty stylish English Pointers in my day. There great dogs but I'll stick with my GSP's. I've had one continuously for over 30 years until 12/27 but that will change come May. Maybe I can find that Robert Abbot print.

Jerry VanHorn 04-17-2018 08:53 AM

I keep telling myself that I really don't need any more advertising/prints..etc..But...I must be weak, because if I do run across a new one...well..you know how it goes.. For example, Dupont did a post card that matched all the prints they gave to dealers. There is one on Ebay for $30...I offered $25 and he declined. I had a friend in Palm Beach that owned an art shop. I had him frame many of these. The SS Fox print is framed in sassafras cut from our farm in Indiana..I pegged the corners and did the copper on the corners. When I find a new one, I put it under the bed with the others..and bring it out later..and tell my wife......" I've had this a long time..don't you remember ?"..Sometimes it works..

Speaking of Robert Abbett . . . I'm the current caretaker of an Orvis "Light Salmon" 8'6", 3/2, 7wt. fly rod formerly owned by by him. (There are a few GSP hairs stuck to the bag.)

Dean Romig 04-17-2018 10:41 AM

A great rod for grilse and the occasional salmon!

Parkers and Orvis Impregnated Bamboo... Two things I cherish!

Rich Anderson 04-17-2018 12:55 PM

Thanks John, I'll have to look for that the dog reminds me of Gunner and Daisy.

Nothing more American than Parkers and Orvis cane rods.

This is an Orvis Ron White built cane rod in my mouth, a snake river finespot cutthroat in my hand. Both are beautiful.

Like the rGSP, you don't see many Brittanies in prints. But they can make great grouse dogs. I favor the setter because they are traditional but I have owned Brittanies also. One of my best grouse dogs, Rusty, was a Brittany. Unlike some Brittanies, he was also stylish on point, as the picture shows.

Dean Romig 04-17-2018 05:20 PM

I had a great male Brittany named Rusty too. Mine was shot and died in my arms... one of my saddest days ever.

.

Tom Flanigan 04-17-2018 05:24 PM

I can't even begin to imagine that. Horrible.

Dean Romig 04-17-2018 05:49 PM

It was a 14 year old kid home from school - no adult at home with him - shot a .22 rifle from his bedroom window at my dog that was in the woods behind his house.
Some people knew who did it but wouldn't tell me until the transient father and his two teenage boys moved away a month later. I think they were afraid I might take the 'law' into my own hands. That was forty years ago, and in those days I might have...

Tom Flanigan 04-17-2018 06:05 PM

Unfortunately that memory will stay with you for life. I never had anything like that happen to me fortunately. But I did have a dog that was stolen from my back yard. The dog was a great grouse dog and he was known as such in the Pawling area. Word gets around and some idiot saw a chance to make a quick buck.

I was beside myself with grief. That dog was my best friend in addition to my grouse partner. Word got out about the dog being stolen. Old Chet Sprague, the dog trainer and gamekeeper at the old Dutchess Valley Club, heard about a finished grouse dog for sale in Connecticut, about 20 miles from my Pawling home.

He took a trip to investigate and found my dog who he knew. The seller swore that it was his dog. Old Chet told him, "you have three minutes to get that dog in my car, or I will thrash you within an inch of your life". The guy put the dog in the car and Chet brought him home to me. I was overjoyed. I asked Chet who had my dog but he would never tell me. He was afraid that I would do something and get arrested. He was right!

Dean Romig 04-17-2018 08:06 PM

I'm glad yours had a hpppy ending.

.

Gary Laudermilch 04-17-2018 08:59 PM

Tom, that is a "Jenny Willow" story, almost.

Tom Flanigan 04-17-2018 09:01 PM

What is a Jenny Willow story?
