RMC reloading kits
Anyone use these? I was thinking of picking up one in 12 ga to load a few brass shells. Seems fairly easy and looks pretty fun, wouldnt be for high volume pressing, but maybe a good 25 or so. Any input would be great, thanks guys!

These are well made and easy to use.
I use it to decap the primer and use the single stage MEC to reprime vs tapping the primer continuously until fully seated with this kit. Priming with the MEC speeds things up a bit. Don't use the resizer / deprime on the MEC though with the brass shells. |
Thanks! Have you used smokeless with these shells? Wads or just the over wad and shot cards?

Yes. A SP 10 wad fits perfectly. Load it just like a plastic shell.

I have heard of 'issues' with using smokeless in brass shells. Remington and Winchester loaded brass shells with smokeless for many years. I do not understand what the 'issues' might be, aside from which powder to use for optimum performance. Give her a whirl and see how it goes! Good Luck!

I have seen factory 12 ga. brass case ammo, presumably loaded with smokeless powder. It was loaded for the military, WWII or later. The only 'issue' I have heard about is that the i.d on some brass cases is larger than 'normal' and requires 11 ga. wads to get a proper fit.

That's good to know, I also have seen the Lee Loaders that are hand tools. I think I'm going to need to start reading and exploring!!

I did a quick search - couldn't find the RMC kit. With the Magteck shells you need large wads like 11ga because the case is so thin. I think the RMC shells are turned on a lathe so they're thicker and may not need larger wads. Better check with them. A shotgun shell needs some sort of resistance to build up proper pressure, and that is mainly in the crimp, although the wad and shot also have some resistance. With a rifle the nose of the shell against the rifling gives the resistance. That's why shotgun and pistol powders interchange. It's the crimp in both that counts. You'll notice in shotgun brass factory ammo they roll crimp the OS wad. If you're not going to do that you better have some pressure on the OS wad when you glue it in or you may get duds. Just something to keep in mind. You won't have the problem with BP like you could with nitro powders.

I did all my reloading when I had brass Magtechs on a Mec 600. A new deprime punch was made and a different bushing for the prime station. After the OS card was put in place all that was left was to glue it in.
