LC Smith 12ga and 45-70 barrels

I picked this up a couple weeks ago. It's a pretty neat set-up. Some of you may have seen it over on the DG site. Drew gave me alot of info. It is in nice shape. The bores are clean and lock up is tight. I'm going to keep the 45-70 rounds at black powder levels. The 45-70 barrels are 26" twist and the 12ga are 28" Crown steel.

I have not contacted him yet. I wish he would let me deliver it to his house but he doesn't allow that anymore. I plan on calling him soon.

Two Virginia clubs have a long running single shot rifle match. 40 shots at swinging Rams 200 yards. Format is like trap shooting. Down the line one shot offhand each shooter rotate positions each 10 shots. It’s still a very popular match at Fairfax Rod&Gun & Cavalier Rifle & Pistol.

25 years ago when I first shot the Match & before the reproduction Sharps etc were available, winning Rifle was a Trapdoor 45/70 more often than not. Standard load was the 330 G Gould bullet with a sub sonic charge of pistol powder. From memory I used Unique 8.4 grs. About 1100 FPS. Ran the bullet .002 over normal .459. Light charge won’t bump them up like Black Powder will, you need the larger bullet.

Recoil like a .22 Rimfire, very accurate easy on the gun. If I had that LC Smith would load something similar

Pulled my copy of Sharpe “Complete Guide to Handloading” out, 1937 edition.

He list 344 grain lead bullet 14.0 Unique as 1335 FPS 11,700 PSI. Velocity not needed for that match We wanted lighter. Routine was drop the charge until the sound did not “crack” indicating sub sonic. Wish I could tell you exactly what my charge was am sure it was under 10 Grains

I wonder why they chose 45-70 on such a large frame ?
I remember reading a couple years ago guys were buying 600 NE barrels from VC and building double rifles on shotguns frames . Cant remember were gauge they were building on though . A 45-120 double would be pretty neat ...

Remington used to important a 45-70 double and I think Pedersoli still makes a hammer gun one .

Petersoli makes a 450 nitro hammer gun for 7,000. just started making it last year. Its a bargain if your in the market. That looks like a nice conversion and in a great caliber.
