High Grade Underlifter

Can you advise? - what was the high grade underlifter hammer gun s/n 12571 that sold today at auction?

Dean Romig 09-16-2017 04:22 PM

12571 is not in the Ser. & ID book but from the pictures I have seen I would say it is at least a Grade 5, possibly a Grade 6.

What was the hammer price?

Hammer price was about $3300 including premium. Sadly answered it myself I think - the top grade D6 (A)?, 1878, in good original shape except heavily refinished barrels, almost obscuring the rib marking - Leland Little auction, with 2 rough G grade guns. Surely we'll see this gun again. Thanks for your help and please add anything else you can.

Grade 6 e frame underlifter 32" DD barrels polished and blued as was the frame and fore end iron. Trigger guard polished and blues loosing a lot of engraving. Locks and hammers as well as skeleton butt plate polished bright diminishing the engraving somewhat. Wood redone years ago. Barrel unstruck weight 6 lb. 6 it's. Order number 3713. Needed help about 3-4 K to bring it back right and a years wait. With a 23% buyers premium and shipping about &3,500.00 or so. Borderline for a 10 gauge IMHO.

Thanks, Jim, that makes me feel a lot better.

Jim DiSpagno 09-16-2017 10:59 PM

Yeah. I went as far as I could before the area of no return, literally.

Hammer price of 3300.00 that included buyers premium? and 3000.00 to put back to original, I would have jumped all over that! They did not make many grade 6 lifter guns, according to The Parker Story only 18, and with 32"DD Barrels, I think some one got a great gun at a good price, Just me talking Gary

Now I don't feel well again. It was all there.

Major, I talked with Jim via telephone a little while ago, he told me that the barrels had some pitting is why he backed off the gun he said one place measured 20 thousands, I guess the auction company had someone check the BWT, That is thin for a 10 gauge but I would question the reliability of the auction house to check BWT in house, most small auction houses do not have the equipment. If the barrels were compromised then that is another matter DD barrels are hard to find, the photo of the muzzle end of the barrels looked good as far as thickness to me, I am a sucker for these old guns, I would have bought it anyway, gary
