"Antiquing" a Silvers Pad

Has anyone followed the process recommended by CVSM? (see below)

"Our correct period pad is the exact color of the pre-war silver’s pad. When they are finished in the described manner, they are undetectable from the original pre-war pad. We have spent a lot of time developing the correct color for this pad.

1. After installation of the pad, buff it with Vaseline to add a sheen
2. Coat it with varnish, tru-oil, and shellac and let dry. This will preserve the sheen."

So I am supposed to apply vasoline, varnish, tru-oil AND shellac?

Thanks,

Jay

Worked fine for me. Vaseline then Tru-Oil. Tru-Oil is mostly shellac. Should be "or", not "and". Or you can just use the gun and the pad will darken over time. Maybe Budweiser works too.

Jay,

My method has always been duck blood and bacon grease with a thin coating of "blue" mud.

Destry, I like your idea the best. I'll make a deal with you: I'll supply the bacon grease if you'll supply the mud. This 20 is choked IM/IM and should make a heck of a gun for woodies and teal.

I'll pick up a couple handfuls next time I'm down south where the real stuff comes from.

Just got my 10 ga barrels back from Dale and I can't wait to put them to good use. You planning multiple trips over to Mitchell's Bay next month?

Steve,

Tried to take a couple yesterday but the lighting did not cooperate. I think they came out REALLY well. Great contrast.

Just posted them under a new thread.

Jay,

We'll be over there pretty regular starting on opening day until the last day in January. October isn't the best month, wait and come in November when it's starting to get right.
