Peters packs the Power

So, I've been at the range this week checking the sighting of deer rifles. Our regular PA deer season opens on Monday. Over the past few years I've hunted mainly with vintage rifles and one of my favorites is an old Winchester 71 in 348 caliber. She has a Lyman 56 receiver sight and I can still see the front bead pretty well. :)
When I was a kid I became enamored with Peters cartridges, both rifle and shotgun. The company's magazine adverts hit a chord with me, with the phrase Peters packs the Power and graphics showing hunters taking brown bears with 30/06's, and dropping turkeys flying high overhead while using high brass 2's. Nowadays you'd better have an ultra magnum or shoot for the gobbler's head with fine shot. Nostalgia can be powerful. I still like Peters shells and here's a cell pic of my Model 71. The cartridges are as crackly and stiff kicking as when made in the 50's. Just goes to show that good guns and ammo will hold up over time. . |

Great picture of a "classic" Winchester. Only thing that would make it better would be a box of these --

I didn't have a box of Peters to photo with my '71. I love the older Peters graphics, especially on their shotshell boxes.
I did have a nice box to go with another of my lever guns. I have two in 38-55, and while the other has set triggers, it isn't as pretty as this one. That tang site is one of the more rare Lymans, with windage behind the pan. |
i bet that 38- 55 is a good deer round..nice rifle and box of shells...the 38-55 is not a common seen round....charlie
