Craig and I, along with two other Vanderbilt Brethren are headed in the Northern NY Zone for a duck hunt this weekend. (Rensselaer Falls area) Most likely divers. But we will chase puddlers if there is an opportunity. Lows expected to be in single digits Fahrenheit - BRRRRRRR!!!

Our hunt was great on day 1. All big ducks. all decoying into a St. Lawrence river cove with a 20 MPH wind. temps hung up in the 20's -quite comfortable compared to our expectations.
Unfortunately the boat motor had a catastrophic diagnosis when we got back to shore and we lost use of the boat. we stayed another day but were had to set up with wind in our faces. 8 degrees bluebird sky set up wrong. it was a short hunt and we headed home. Always big fun. 13 days till our second season opens. Counting them down by the hour! |
I had to put on a sweater just to read the post and look at the pictures!:rotf:
Thanks for posting those photos. |

Cold weather duck hunting is for only the most dedicated. Mark was shooting a Parker 3 frame 12ga and I was shooting my Super Fox. Our friends were shooting a Benelli Super Eagle 1 and a Model 23 Winchester Duck. The next morning the temps dropped to 7 and ice fog on the river kept the ducks from flying. A full moon and north wind also pushed ducks south overnight. Sometimes you just hit the migration and conditions perfectly as we did on our first hunt.

Question: how many ducks did they get? Answer: Two piles. That is what I say when someone asks how many doves did you get.
