Cheddite 10 gauge hulls

Do the Chedditte 10's work alright with the REM SP-10 wads ? Also will CCI209 and WIN 209's fit in the hulls correctly ?

Austin J Hawthorne Jr. 07-22-2017 08:42 PM

Just from my own experience...If the hulls are brand new, I've found SP-10's to fit a little loose and would suggest a large flake powder like Red Dot to avoid powder migration around the base of the wad. Once the hulls have been fired a few times, the interior has roughened up a bit, and the SP-10's work well with all appropriate powders.

Thanks ! And how about primers ? I have CCI , WIN and REM 209's on hand most of the time and I'd prefer to use them should I buy some Chedditte hulls .

I disassembled a RST 10ga bismuth load and they are using the Remington SP-10 wad, they use Cheddite hulls. I have loaded once fired RST-Cheddite 10ga hulls with 7625 and WW-209's and not experienced any issues.

I switched from Cheddites to Remington's because my Remington would not close on the shells after a couple of firings. Even after going through a super sizer. My Remington has very tight chambers though and the shells were used in an EM Riley as well which has looser chambers. It appeared the rim diameter had expanded so they would not fully seat in the chamber......

I was under the impression that all cheddite hulls required the larger European primers. I have to use them in my Rio hulls. Rio makes their own primers that fit fine. I was also under the impression that cheddite hulls were straight sided and not tapered so SP-10's would not be the best choice. I'm sure they'd work OK but, as stated above, would be a bit loose.

Austin J Hawthorne Jr. 07-23-2017 09:59 AM

I had a box of factory 20 gauge Rio's that I attempted to reload after firing, and tried CCI..Rem...and Federal 209's, but the fit was so loose that you could take them out with your fingernail. However, all of these primers worked well in Cheddite hulls. Are Rio's made using Cheddite hulls, or just a similar straight walled hull?

I believe Rio is a different hull ( i believe they manufacture most of their own components )

look for the stars on the brass for Cheddite hull no matter who loads them

That's pretty much the reason I asked as I was under the same impression 🤔

l have loaded a lot of RST (cheditte) hulls with WIN 209s and had no problem shooting them on clays (12 ga)

Richard Flanders 07-23-2017 11:12 AM

Rio hulls have the stars on the base and definitely require the larger European primers. Maybe they get the plastic part from Cheddite and put their own brass on or have cheddite put brass on that requires the larger primer. Rio has a factory in Texas now and their ammo got more expensive when they did that. Their ammo is the cleanest burning I've ever seen and the hulls reload well in my experience.

i too ran into some problems usein reo primers they were just to big for the hulls i had...but reo shells are like what richard said cleanest burn of any thing i have shot...charlie

Rio primers are European size and not intended for American hulls like Federal, Rem, Win.

Paul Harm 07-27-2017 02:09 PM

As far as I know all 10ga hulls are straight walled hulls. The Rem SP-10 is even a little loose in a Rem hull. The Cheddite primers are fine - same diameter as Win, Fed, or Rem - or close enough not to make a difference. I've been using the BPI 10ga wads - cheaper than the SP-10 wad. For low pressure target loads [ 1oz in the 10 ] I just treat Rem, Fed, Win, and RST hulls all the same for reloading data. Haven't had a problem yet.

Howdy! First post, and hope to learn a lot from you all. New to the 10 ga, but not shotshell loading.
Rio and ched hulls are made by different companies and have different (though similar) basewad profiles. Capacity is very nearly the same (in 12 ga at least).
Rio primers are noticeably larger then American primers. Ched primers are in the middle. I've loaded cci and win primers in ched hulls with mixed luck--sometimes it's a snug fit, sometimes it backs out upon crimping. So I use ched primers in ched hulls. They're cheap and go bang!

Paul Harm 10-04-2017 09:17 AM

About all I use are Cheddite primers and there is no difference in fit between Cheddite, Win, Fed, or Rem primers - they all mic the same. I've even gone back to a couple of hundred Win or Fed primers on occasion and found no problem with loose fit.

Charlie Hutchins 10-05-2017 11:29 AM

The ched cx2000 I Mic'ed this morning are .242". The Rios are .244", win and cci-m are both .239".
I dint find fit problems with American primers in all ched hulls. Ched hulls come in various levels of quality--the ones I get from BPI seem to be made to a higher standard and hold up longer then the ones I've gotten from hevi shot loads. I've used 100's of win209's in ched hulls and most (~70%) have fit ok.
Not trying to be argumentative, and I hope I'm not coming off that way. Just sharing my narrow experience (16 & 12 ga--just starting with the 10 ga, so take it for what it's worth).

Paul Harm 10-07-2017 04:50 PM

I've never loaded Cheddite hulls - a friend gives me once fired 10ga Fed, Win, and Remingtons. I do buy him a water at the club for his gracious gifts. Hope I haven't over rewarded him.
