Help needed

I have an old parker that Mr Graham has checked out and made some repairs. Upon his examination the right barrel is thin right in front of the chamber. It is a 1 1/2, 12 guage. His advice was to not shoot it, in that barrel. I am not a safe queen type of guy, any advice on where I may find a set of 1 1/2 barrels? Or would I be better off sending it to have tubes put in it for 20 guage? It is to nice to just sit around and look pretty.

That is a bad place for thin barrel walls. I have a 16 with similar issue and Briley put 28 gauge short tubes with great results.

What are the measurements of the barrel?

Dudley, I don't remember exactly, I just remember he said he wouldn't even suggest rst loads out of the right barrel.

What would a minimum wall thickness in front of the chambers be for a 12 gauge, any frame size?

Dean Romig 09-11-2023 09:17 PM

My WAG is about 0.0115" as a minimum... or should I say that for my own personally safety I wouldn't shoot an old sxs that had less than 0.0110" at the juncture of the chamber and the beginning of the forcing cone.

I have a Damascus 0-frame 16 gauge GHE that Oscar Gaddy measured at 0.0063" and wrote to me that it "is probably safe to shoot with pressures of less than 7,500 psi."

I ain't 100% sure but if I remember I think.0030. It had been refinished and he said they took too much out while doing so. I may wind up just getting a set of tubes from briley, but I would love to find a set of barrels and have them fitted.

Well, without knowing what the measurements were, we cannot exactly advise on it. Keep an eye out for barrels and hope they can be fitted. Best of luck.

Thicknesses at the front of the forcing cones will usually be in the .090” to .110” area on 12g guns. I have seen as low as .080” in various gauges and they were perfectly shootable guns.
