2 barrel VH 12 gauge

I would like your opinion.
I have the opportunity to pick up a VH 2 barrel 12 gauge 26 and 28 inch barrels.
The stock is in very poor condition, pinned, cracked and rechecked.
My opinion would be to get a new stock made.
The asking price is 1500.
After checking with a if people the price of a new stock could range fro a high of 5000 to a low of 3000.
My concern is would I have way more money in this gun than it would be ever worth.
Thoughts?

Bob that one's a financial loser for sure. I know, I co-authored the book on that topic. If there's no sentimental family history or something you didn't mention I would pass for sure.

Thanks no family history just a plain vh 12 gauge

Keep looking. There are better ones out there for good money. The one you inquired about is a money sink.

If the barrels are in the same condition as the stock, I'd say pass. If the barrels are nice, and both factory numbered to the gun, there are other ways to restock the gun besides a custom job from an accomplished stockmaker. I put a new buttstock on an Ithaca Lewis model a number of years ago. Got ShowMe gunstocks to fit a semi inletted blank to the action for $300, I think the blank was $250, then I finished the final sand and finish with French Polish myself. I paid 325 for the gun (also a 2 barrel set by the way) and came out with a nice two barrel shooter, with a stock cut to my dimensions, for less than a grand. You might see if you can get him down to a grand and then make some inquiries into semi inletted stocks. FWIW.

I bought a VH 12 2 barrel 28 and 32 set that was originally ordered locally . I paid way below what you’re guy is asking . My gun has been pinned but should turn out okay if I ever get around to shooting it , hence the number one problem with acquiring an over abundance of shotguns . You can’t shoot them all enough to pick out the ones that work best for you . This two barrel set however may eventually end up in the Philippines with me . It has no sentimental attachment and what I have invested isn’t that great if it should disappear . And the short barrels are more open and of course the longer barrels are tighter . I’d never consider taking a Parker there that was of several thousand value .

P.S. that price was without any checkering. A year or so later I sent the gun to California to a shop that did fairly cheap machine checkering.
They put on a two panel two point diamond pattern based on a rubbing I sent them from the original Ithaca stock. $165 plus $40 shipping. I couldnt be happier for a field gun.
