Herter's line discontinued
 

Bass Pro/Cabelas is apparently discontinuing their Herters shell line, they were actually made by cheddite. I guess no good thing lasts forever. Such a shame as they were a good bargain, and were easily reloaded. For us 16 ga fans they were the best buy out there. I would shoot them in my fluid steel guns (Parkers, Foxes, and Ithacas), and then cut them down to 2/1/2" to make nice 3/4 and 7/8 oz 16 ga loads for my damascus guns. I also cut down the 20's to shoot in my little 20 ga J. Manton hammer gun. I have given away hundreds of their 16 hulls, but probably still have close to a thousand of them.
The low recoil 12 ga shells were pleasant to shoot also.
I was at Cabelas this weekend and was able to scarf up the few remaining
boxes of 16 ga, a few 8"s and a a few boxes of 6's, at $4.88/box, and 5 boxes of 16 ga 1 1/8 of 5's, at $6.88 box.
Disscussion on the 16 ga forum confirms this, as did a gentleman at Cabelas.
The East coast distribution center is here in Wheeling, and they had no more inventory. I forgot to look for the Low recoil 12's, and may go back to look for them.

So... Cabela's/Bass Pro Shops are no longer importing them?

Who actually makes these shotshells?.... We know Cheddite makes the hulls.... who makes the actual loaded shotshells?

From another forum, the Herters brand is owned by Cabelas, it was made by cheddite for cabbalas. An e-mail purportedly from them said they will be willing to continue those loadings when they can find another distributor. This was on the shotgun world general shotgun forum page 2. As with any such source take it for what it is.

I can not vouch for the accuracy of that, it is at best third hand information. Other forums have come to the same conclusions. A shooting friend took up reloading because of it and i gave him a MEC 650 to get him started with a light 1 oz. load. He is amazed that a light load does better and is more comfortable, he was shooting Gun club 1 1/8 which they no longer have either.

That's to bad. Hope they find a new distributor as I was just starting to like those low recoil 12 gauge offerings. Not sure we have another source for decent target load16's at their price point, or do we and I am not aware ??

All of my 1200 fps 1 ounce 16s came from Dick's back when we liked Dick's. I have a lifetime supply so will never have to worry about 16s again. Watch the obituaries.

This is very unfortunate. The Herter’s 1oz 12 gauge Low Recoil loads are my go-tos for sporting clays. RST has a nice 1oz load (maxi-lite), but at almost double the cost of the Herter’s ($54 v. $100 per flat). Factor in shipping and you are paying more than double. (Cabela’s shipped the Herter’s for free.)

As a silver lining, the addition cost of RST gets you a much better aroma (for those in to such things). The only downside of the Herter’s is the fowl smell of the burnt powder.

Those low recoil 12ga loads were wonderful for targets; about 1060fps - soft as a baby's butt. When I heard the news I hustled to the local store; all I could find was a flat + 5 boxes of the 1oz 1200fps 12's which I snagged. Bought 4 boxes of 9mm too; I assume the brass is going as well?

I shot trap with those loads last week using a 36" DHE. No recoil and the boys at the local club were making fun of them. Said they sounded like more like a 410. They break birds just fine. Wish I would have bought more.
