Parker with spiral cuts in barrels?

Why would a Parker have no chokes and what looks like spiral cuts about halfway down each tube?

I have one also, it is a 16 Ga VH. It had a small hole 1 inch from the end of the barrel and I had the gun cut off to 28 inches. I now wish I had 't done this.
