10 & 16 G with Green Dot

Chronograph is a chore, avoid it but had to crono some Lever Action Silhouette loads. 38/40 & 25/20. Took two Parker Hammer guns and a Trojan, 16 G & 10 G all loaded with Green Dot, & clocked them same time, interesting results.

My standard 10 G load.

10 G Federal hull cut to 2 7/8 Fold crimp. Remington SP 10 wad fiber filler. 1 1/8 oz Winchester Primer 23.5 Green Dot.
Average 1302 FPS Extreme spread 32 FPS. Clean burn very little residue in the bores.

No need to go that fast, going to cut the charge 1 grain & re-check.

16 G several hulls and loads. Two objectives, hunting load for theTrojan and absolute minimum load for clay targets to 25 yards in the O Frame Hammer gun. Note on the 16 G Society spread sheets 14.5 Green Dot is minimum GD Load listed.

For the Trojan

Cheddite new hulls 2 ¾ inches Fold crimp DR 16 wad no filler Winchester Primer 7/8 oz 14.4 Green dot. Average 1038 FPS Extreme spread 8 FPS clean burn little residue. I account the low ES to new hulls and good crimps as well as more shot and enough Powder. Use it as is.

For the 16 Hammer

Herters (Cheddite) once fired hulls 2 ¾ inches fold crimp DR 16 Wad 3/4 oz Cherrio filler. Winchester Primer 14.0 Green Dot Average 988 fps Extreme spread 138 fps. Dirty load with obvious velocity variation from the sound. It’s too light.

Herters (Cheddite) once fired hulls cut to 2 5/8 inches fold crimp DR 16 Wad no filler Winchester Primer ¾ oz 14.4 Green Dot. Average 1021 fps Extreme spread 63 fps. Much cleaner burn than 14 Grs

Same as above in New Cheddite hulls cut to 2 5/8 inches Average 1037 fps Extreme spread 45 fps.

Same as above in Remington Game Load hulls cut to 2 5/8 inches Average 1124 fps Extreme spread 11 fps. No doubt smaller internal capacity Remington increases pressure and gives the cleanest burn of all with lower ES.

Probably ought to load all 16’s with 15 grs Green dot. Skip the Remington hulls, they are in poor condition & hard find in good shape. Will load some up 15 grs chronograph and see how the recoil feels.

william i too like to find good loads for my guns i use green dot in some of my 10 ga loads i use 22 grains ans a 1 1/8 ounce of shot. i get clean burns little recoil...i m sure you will find a good load to suit you before long...charlie

Charlie I think you have it just right at 22 grs GD. plan to try that 19 Red Dot load too.

22.5 grains is where I settled for 1 1/8 ounce in the Short Ten. Looking at the results of your test I will bet 22 grains of GD is right where you want to be a for a period correct loading, 1150 to 1175 fps.

Pete I think you are right. What's your charge when you load 1 1/4 oz, looking for the same velocity ?

I have been shooting 27 grains of Green Dot in the Federal hull with 1 1/4 ounce of lead. My decision to load 27 grains was based on a published Alliant load in the 3.5" length hull, it has a M/V of 1265 fps with 29 grains of Green Dot. My educated guess is the 27 grains is moving it along at 1175 to 1200 fps. Looking at published reloading data it seems there is a very close correlation to the % increase and decrease in velocity with % increase and decrease the amount of powder, not perfect but close.

PS. Pressure on the 29 grain load in the 3.5" hull was 8800 psi so 27 will be even lower, my guess probably around 8000 psi.

I need to figure out how much Unique , Green Dot and Universal Clays to use in the 10 gauge with the SP-10 wad a 16 gauge 1/8" filler and 1 1/4 ounces of shot and keep the velocity around 1100 FPS . May also try for the same thing with Blue Dot and Herco .
