800X Powder

Has anyone used 800X for 1 oz 12 gauge loads? The manual doesn't show loads for anything lighter than 1 1/8 oz. 800 X has always been a favorite of mine for pheasant loads, but now I want to load it for target stuff. Thanks.

I can't find any loads for 1 oz., I thought that I had loaded 1 oz. 800x loads before.
Maybe you can find somthing here.

If you find something be sure to post it. I bought a couple of large cans a couple of yrs ago for a very good price and intended to use it for target loads but haven't found appropriate 1oz loads either.

I'm now away from my loading bench, but I did find some 1 oz. loads in an old IMR manual which I will post when I get home. I believe that the reason the 1 oz loads were dropped was poor/ incomplete combustion, particularly in cold weather. (Tough luck Richard!) I'm wondering if increased wad pressure, and the resulting smaller combustion chamber mught improve ignition

I have use 800x loaded lightly in 1 oz. and it does not burn completely. It still can break 25 straight on 16 yard targets and I love the lack of recoil. It does leave the barrel dirty but if you save a 700x shell for your last shot it cleans up very quickly. I load 21 grns. with a CB wad.

John Dallas 09-26-2010 09:43 PM

A 1983 DuPont reloading guide shows a number of options, depending on case/primer and wad, but they generally use 23 or 23.5gr of 800X. AA case with 209 primer WAA12F1 wad and 23 grains of 800X results in 1195 fps and pressure (LUP) of 5900. Many more loads with 1 1/8 oz shot.

I'm going to try a couple of boxes of this recipe on clays later this week. I'll report on my findings.

If you have a specific combination you are interested in, PM me, and I'll see if it's in the guide.

Not good in the cold, eh? Sounds like PB, which I have LOTS of. It burns like charcoal in the cold. I always use a factory load to clean the bbls on my last shots. Maybe I'll just use the 800x for hunting loads of some sort..

John Dallas 09-29-2010 03:20 PM

Just back from trying out 23.5 gr of 800 X and 1 oz of shot in AA cases. Performed flawlessly in 65 degree weather. As others have described, barrels are dirty, but I don't care - will clean them regardless. I like the lack of recoil.

BTW, shot at the recently opened Bald Mountain Michigan course near Pontiac. Still a work in progress, but it is a slick track. Three traps at each of 14 stations, plus 5 stand and an "executive" type of 5 stand. Easy targets.

If you're in the area, I would recommend a trip there. Shot with Jay Gardner and a friend. Jay's refurbished 28 gauge Repro by Batchelder is a gem.

65deg, eh? Fat chance of that here for a while... it's 19deg and snowing right now and I have a 480mi flite to make on Friday, wx allowing ,which it very well may not do. My brother lives just a few miles from that Bald Mtn range. I thought it was closed for good; didn't realize they were re doing it. Great. I liked shooting there. I'd figure out which station I wasn't good at on that old SClay course and just stay there until I figured it out. I kicked some huge deer outa there one day, a herd actually, from the swale right in front of the old 5-stand.

Does anyone know what the conversion is for LUP to PSI?

Carl Brandt 09-30-2010 12:11 PM

John,

From what I have read and heard from others is that there is no reliable method of conversion. I understand that PSI is measured as peak pressure and LUP (Lead Unit of Pressure) is sort of cumulative because a small lead slug is actually crushed to make the reading.

Carl.

Paul Harm 09-30-2010 01:34 PM

PSI is about 1000 higher than LUP for shotgun pressure range. I loved the PB but it got to expensive. Maybe you weren't loading enough to generate enough pressure for a clean burn. Any of you guys who live close to Bald Mountain come on up to my home range - Lapeer County Sportsmans Club. We have a 5-Stand, Sporting Clays, and Duck Towers [at this time of year]. Think you'll find us cheaper, more friendly, and more fun. We're open Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. Give me a call at home if you're thinking of coming; there's not always someone at the club to answer the phone. I run the shotgun venue, so we can set up what ever you want. We also have wobble trap, skeet, and trap. Call me at 810-724-5582. Paul

Richard Flanders 10-10-2010 09:27 PM

Long story Charlie. I was 10hrs enroute to go the 480 miles. Started out in ferocious headwinds, low clouds/fog and drizzle and 33deg but never iced up; not sure why. It had to be close. After 100miles on the deck up a river canyon it opened up and from there on it was just headwinds up to 45mph. I made it home in time to visit a dying friend one last time; he died 3.5hrs later so it was worth the difficult flite.
