Short Ten Winchester Super Handicap Load: Test Results
 

I just received test results for a new Winchester Super Handicap target load (using 1 1/8 oz. of lead). The components are: (1) a 10 gauge Remington (green) hull (cut to 2 7/8''); (2) a Winchester 209 primer; (3) 18.5 grains of Winchester Super Handicap; (4) an SP-10 wad; (5) one ½’’ fiber wad in the wad cup; (6) 1.125 ounces of #8 lead; (7) two 16 gauge overshot cards; and (8) a 6 point fold crimp. The result: 960 fps @ 4090 psi.

This load is too weak for me, but the results indicate that Winchester Super Handicap has potential for the short ten. To be explored further.

Just received additional test results for two more Winchester Super Handicap target loads (using 1 1/8 oz. of lead). The components are the same as my first tested load, but with (a) 20.0 grains of Winchester Super Handicap; and (b) 21.5 grains of Winchester Super Handicap. The results: (a) 1067 fps @ 4692 psi; and (b) 1187 fps @ 5720 psi.

I have not tried the load yet, but on paper it looks very good. Depending on how much velocity you like, the sweet spot seems to be between 20 and 22 grains of Winchester Super Handicap. Plus, very low pressure.

To compare with Red Dot, 21.0 grains of Winchester Super Handicap should be comparable to 19.0 grains of Red Dot – about 1150 fps – but the Winchester Super Handicap load will generate about 1,500 psi less pressure than the Red Dot load. That is significant.

i think you have some good loads there..these last loads would be good bird hunting loads...charlie

Those sound real nice. I like 1oz loads for clays, so I might try 22.5 or even 23grs. I'd have to check how clean it burned with the 22.5 before going higher. Thanks for the data.

Given the pressures, this powder may be better suited for 1 1/4 lead loads. Thanks for sharing.
