Question regarding 2 1/2 & 2 5/8 Chambers
 

Yes I needed advice. I have a sterlingworth with 2.5 inch chambers that I reload 2.5 inch shells for. I just bought a fox AE grade with 2 5/8 chambers :). I would think that 2.5 inch shells with the same loads I shoot in the sterlingworth would shoot just fine in the 2.5/8 chambers. I wanted to know if anyone has tried it and if it worked well or if it messed up the pattern or worse.

also the barrels seem to be 4 weight, Cromox Fluid Compressed Steel .....What does that mean ??

The shells you shoot in the Sterly are fine in the AE. The 2 5/8" chambers are intended for 2 3/4" shells but shorter shells are just fine.

I realize this is not the question you asked. I'm just throwing it out there for thought. Sherman Bell published an article in Double Gun Journal regarding longer shells in short chambers. The short and long of it Bell found shooting a 2 3/4" shell in a 2 1/2" chamber increased chamber pressure by 300 psi. He deduced the increased pressure was negligible. I have gleefully shot 2 3/4" shells in an 1881 Lifter Parker Twist Steel Barrels with impunity for decades. As a side note I am delighted you are afield with guns too good to sit in a dark closet.

Thanks for the info Harry. Yes sir. I plan on shooting it. If I can’t use it for what it was built for I have no use for it.

Fox barrels were grouped in weight ranges
the standard barrel weights on a Fox ran from 1 to 4 - 4 being the lightest

there were 0 weights on the Super Foxes -

Thanks for the info OH. Are the 4 weight barrels still strong enough for a decent load? They are stamped Fox Proof. Or something like that on the bottom

assuming no alterations -

i would not worry about Fox Chromx barrels with a normal field or target load

personally - i still go with lighter loads to save a beating on old wood

I quit measuring chambers. Because I also shoot low pressure loads with 3/4oz of shot a slight increase in pressure with a shorter chamber means nothing. As stated in the other replies, you could quit cutting shells and shoot 2 3/4 shells if you so wanted. I have a Fox Sterlingworth over at the club right now and I'm asking $400 for it.
