I'm going to really show my ignorance here but I would have thought that the case hardening temperatures would have melted the gold inlays. I'm surprised that they are done before case hardening.
Interesting story.

the gold goes on before because it had a higher melting point...in some thread here it was explained by edger how this is done...charlie
