16 ga Federals

I cannot find the post, but recall someone stating that they dont recommend using Federal hulls for reloading in Damascus barrelled guns. I was going to load 1 oz #6 for pheasant in a low pressure load to use in my GH 16 and Lefever G 16 damascus. Using those purple hulls would just help me keep all my different loads from getting mixed up. Thanks
Harold

Boy Harold I don't know why. I think I would load a few and if they go together good and go bang and come out easy. Use em. ch

I'd like to know who would have said that. What possible difference could it make what hull you're using ? The barrels, whether damascus or steel, can't tell the difference. Let's see - damascus barrels talking - I don't like Federal hulls, think I'll blow up. Don't think so.

I've been using purple Federal hulls in steel and Damascus since three years before they made them, with good results. I can't imagine that thread exists because I've been reading this forum since three years before it existed.

I think it had something to do with straight walled hulls vs tapered hulls, such as RGL's. Guess I will load up some 1 oz loads for pheasants so I can use my GH 16 and Lefever G. Many thanks gentlemen.

The ideal situation would be straight wads in straight walled hulls although tapped wads can be used in straight walled hulls. You'll see less performance. Those Federal hulls work just fine, and better if straight wads are used - no worry of powder migrating by the wad.

Great, the load calls for the old W AA 16 or the Claybuster clone--I believe they are straight wall. Similar load uses SG16 wad which I also have.

Harold, I believe the WAA16 is tapered for the tapered Winchester hull?..... But, I have been wrong before.
