Another dealer we do favors for cane in a little while ago and handed me a couple baggies with short 10 factory loads . 18 Winchester’s #4’s and 9 Remington #4’s .

CraigThompson 02-11-2019 11:05 AM

In the past I shot up a couple boxes of the Remingtons in my grandfathers W&C Scott hammerless 10 gauge .

Mills Morrison 02-11-2019 11:39 AM

Cool!

I'm planning on heading to the club Wednesday I think I just might pattern my DH 10 at 25 and 40 yardswhile I'm there . And if I can sucker a friends son into calling a turkey for me this spring

My maternal grandfather used these loads for dove in the late 60’s and early 70’s in the 1881 W&C Scott I have now . Simple reason they were the only factory loads that could be found around here . To be honest he killed far more hawks with that gun then he did dove .

Lead #4 Super 10 loads last a long time. In 1985, I bought an Ithaca NID No. 2 Super 10 from Randy Shuman, and that year Winchester dropped the sole remaining 2 7/8 inch Super 10 load from their offerings. Remington had dropped the Super 10 a few years before. I bought all the Super 10 shells Potomac Arms had at their end of season ammo sale, some 24 boxes. I still have these full and a part box --

Is Randy still around? He sure knew lot about Winchesters (and others)

This is just my position on things, BUT... I would be VERY circumspect about shooting any of these loads in any old double, especially a W & C Scott that's 138 years old.

Why? Because the stock wood has dried out for well over a century and may not be able to withstand the recoil of these loads. And a split stock head is not something pleasant to deal with.

Still, it's your gun...

He is if I remember correctly was or is running a small gun business out of his home . Think he had to wait five years after he sold the business in town before he could sell again in that area . I was told that was in the agreement when he sold the place .

I’ve got an NID #2 Super 10 as well . Got it a year or two before you got the one you have . Although ours has had the barrels reblued and the wood refinished . Now if I could just find a reasonably priced NID #2 MAG 10 I’d have ALL the Ithaca guns I’d want .

You’re most likely 100% correct and I don’t disagree with you . The Scott rarely is fired anymore as I have a dozen other 10’s . In all likelihood that Scott will go in the box with me when the time comes just hope it’s 30+ years down the road . It mostly now when rarely shot gets Ross Seyfrieds load using 30 grains of SR7625 pushing 1 1/4 - 1 1/2 ounce payload . To date I’ve taken deer , dove and geese with it using that basic load .

That's a fine old "duckbill" Scott. Please be kind to it. I've had a number of them, and the upper horn of the stock head between the top tang and side plates is especially vulnerable to damage.

If you look in the upper right hand corner of the picture that’s the last box my grandfather bought . Box is empty now but I keep it just the same I can remember going in the Gunshop to buy that box when I was eight years old in 1969 .

Don’t have the pics in my phone but I also have a Scott 12 gauge hammerless sidelock and a Scott 20 gauge hammerless back action . I always liked the little hammer windows in all three guns . We “had” a fine old Scott back action 10 very similar to the one I have but with a skoosh better engraving . Sold it to a fellow on GunsInternational and shipped it to him broke down . UPS in their infinite wisdom found a way to put 4 or 5 noticeable dents in the barrels and crack the stock . Guy that bought it wanted to keep it instead of returning it for a refund and of course it was insured . So the barrels if I’m not mistaken went to Kirk Merrington and I think Danny Patton did the stock work . That was a shame as the gun was almost like new before they messed it up .

charlie cleveland 02-11-2019 07:07 PM

those old remington shells were my favorite loads in the short ten...i may have a box of 4 s and some bb loads...the bb loads are deadly on ducks and turkeys....a good friend you have there.....charlie

He had a table at the January Las Vegas Antique & Sporting Arms Show in 2016, first year at the Westgate. Pretty much Jill sat at the table and on a regular basis we saw Randy scurry back and place another prize under the table. Didn't see him in 2017 or 18 and I didn't go this year.

Yes, I was in touch with him two weeks ago on a gun he had on Gunbroker. Since then I've seen others offered by Randy on GB.

John Dallas 02-11-2019 10:10 PM

My strongest memory of him was at an OGCA show probably 12 years ago. He was discussing an obscure M70 rifle or carbine for which the records showed only about 7 had been produced. He said he was going to the Las Vegas show the following week, and that there would be 12 or so of therm there for sale. Such is the counterfeiting world. I'm sure it's only gotten worse

Yes, Randy and Jill are still doing it out of their house on Steelstown Road in Newville PA.

They send out a very impressive list of their inventory every couple months. Their last list included more than 100 model 70's and there were 5 Parkers.

I'm glad to hear that, I bought my Parker VHE 410 skeet gun from Randy twenty some years ago, I picked it up from my gunsmith and called him from the shop to say I got it etc. and before I could say more he said "send it back" yes he had seller's remorse :) No I didn't send it back.

I talked last week with a gent who was offered a full case (20 boxes) of those Remington Express plastic 10 ga/2-7/8" shells with 4-shot for $600. He only wanted a few boxes and he passed. Last I saw they were going for 30-40 bucks a box and that's what I told him. Of course they use the old Rem 57 primer and the hulls aren't compatible with 209's. Any recent updates on that retail box pricing?

Daniel Carter 02-12-2019 09:24 AM

Regarding 57 primers there is a trick I got from the reloading forum.Remove the 57 in the usual way then seat a FIRED 209, remove it and seat a new 209. Have done that with early 60's Remington plastic 16 ga. and it works well so 57 primed hulls are usable.
