Merkel 1620
2 Attachment(s)
I lucked into a Merkel 1620 recently at a very affordable price that I wanted to show off. These 1620's are one of the nicest carrying 16's I've come across that you can shoot pretty much any modern factory ammunition through without worrying about it. This particular 1620 has a English stock and single trigger which I prefer for late season hunting with gloves in MN. The previous owner installed a Pachmayr pad that brings the gun weight to 6lbs 7oz. I'm guessing that's adding 3-4ozs to the gun. That probably isn't a bad thing when shooting 1 1/4oz loads. The chokes measure .002 and .016 and LOP with the pad is 15". I have the original butt plate also. Are there any other 1620's out there next to the Parkers in the gun safes?

Yep... I own one and love it.

Congrats on a great gun, Matt..I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
Absolutely love mine and it fits me like a glove!! |
That is an extremely nice piece of wood. Obviously and EL, but not all ELs look like yours.

One of the best handling, modern guns Merkel ever made. Why they quit making this model is beyond me. Try to find a plain 1620 anywhere. I also love mine. You did good Mathew.

I have to ask:
WHY in God's name are you shooting 1 1/4 oz loads in a 16-bore? Just curious... |
+1
An ounce of number five shot in each chamber is good medicine. *I don't shoot ducks or Geese though.. |
I typically don't shoot 1 1/4 oz but on late season MN pheasants and my shooting ability I like to throw all the lead that I can at the ringnecks. My favorite late load is the Fiocchi 1 1/8 oz #5's.

1 1/4 oz loads are magnum loads in the 16 ga, I have several boxes of magnum 2's and 4's given to me that I will probably never shoot. Doesn't matter how much lead you throw at them, if you don't get those gun barrels out in front of the bird, they will keep flying,
( and I keep demonstrating that to myself with great frequency). That is a wonderful gun!! |
I use to shoot "pocket rockets" at pheasants in a 12 gauge. I missed them just the same as a 1oz load. I have 10 boxes of 1 3/8 oz of 5s in 12 gauge. They will never get used.
