20 Gauge Cheddite 3 Inch Hulls
 

I'am going to order some 3 Inch 20 gauge Cheddite hulls from BP. I have loaded shot shells for a number of years. I have no experience with Cheddite hulls.
MY QUESTIONS ARE
1 are they any good ? Do you like"um or hate"um?
2 Is their a lot of wall flex with heavy loads?
3 Do the cases split easily when fired?
4 They are a straight walled case. Do they like some wads more than others?
5 How long do they normally last??
I would like to know your thoughts and opinions on these Cheddite hulls.
I do think I might just like once fired hulls better than new ones????

According to Tom Armbrust, once fired cases (and subsequent loadings) have slightly higher pressures and velocities than new cases

I believe they all take the larger European primers. Someone can please correct me if this is not correct. Rio seems the most available of those from what I've seen, which isn't much.

The Herter's Cheddite hulls take a 209 primer.

These are straight hulls.

You will get a better gas seal with a wad designed for a straight hull than a wad designed for a tapered hull.

Ballistic Products has them. Gaulandi, B&P, Federal, etc.

The Dispersor-20-gauge spreader wad with Federals is a great combination.

Just my opinion. Cheddite hulls are inferior quality to American hulls. First, the metal is very thin. All of my automatics bend them and even the extractors will put a big dent in the rim. Don't ask how many cuss words I spit out when my recently reloaded Cheddites spit the primer into the action of my Beretta auto on the first shot jamming the gun as the geese flew away. I had to seal them with fingernail polish to use them up and then only as the third shot. The primer hole is slightly oversized, and even though loads tell you to use American 209s, they will upon occasion in an auto spit out the primer. So you have to use Cheddite primers or a Williams Primer Pocket Peener to make the hole smaller to keep the primer intact. Obviously in a double gun the spitting out of the primer is not a factor.

I would go with RP once fired 20 gauge 3" hulls every day over new Cheddites. I use them for 1 1/8 oz. loads. Less problems. With that said, because 16s are hard to find I do use new Cheddites and scrounge up the used purple hulls from the bottom of the barrels at events since they are already 2.5".

You are the second person to tell me the same story. I think maybe I should listen. Last guy's story was loose fired primer came out and got down under barrels on an old superposed, had to take the gun home to get the primer out. He said that it got smashed and logged under the barrels.
I have some Remington and a 100 Federals some Winchester cases. I think I will stay with what i know, and leave the new high tech. stuff to those that understand it, or have the patience for it. Some times I still load card wads and Federal paper cases just for the stink. Not to mention they do shoot well in my short chambered Parkers and other old guns. My cheep Crony tells me that they shoot consistent velocities too, and they pattern well with Lubaloy and other coper coated shot.
I tried to buy Federals from BP, but they do not have any, then said they did not know when they would have any. I do tend to shoot heavy loads, and the thought of the thin brass you described I just can-not live with. (NOT IN MY SHOTGUN). I think if i just get serious about this I can find some good USA cases. Had I not done so much PARTYING (Birthday parties) I would not be into this six and a half pound 20 gauge thing.

I just looked in my reloading stuff. I have at least 50 once fired federals and 75 super x
hulls you can have for the shipping. There are some old herter's 3" wads also.
